Antimicrobial Resistance Manure Intervention Strategies - ARMIS
More and more animal manure is being processed before it is applied to land.
Aim
In ARMIS, RIVM together with WUR and international partners investigated the extent to which manure processing can reduce antibiotic resistance. Measurements were conducted in Canada, Romania, Germany and the Netherlands.
Results
Composting, fermentation, biological and large-scale treatment can reduce the amount of resistant bacteria. However, resistant bacteria, such as MRSA and ESBL E. coli, are still found in the end products. Transmission of resistance to other bacteria may also potentially occur during manure processing, but the frequency is lower after manure processing. Neighbours of manure processing installations in the Netherlands are more often worried about these installations than the general population, but do not show more stress. Participation in the placement of these installations is associated with fewer worries - an indication of the importance of communication with local residents.
