Impact of reducing colistin use on colistin resistance in humans and poultry in Indonesia
Antimicrobial resistance threatens the effectiveness of life-saving antibiotics. In Indonesia, the antibiotic colistin was banned from livestock use in 2020 because it is a last-resort medicine for humans.
Aim
The COINCIDE project studied whether the ban of the antibiotic colistin in Indonesia reduced resistance in people and poultry.
Results
Research in Central Java showed that colistin resistance is rare and that farmers largely comply with the ban. The project also developed an affordable laboratory test and strengthened local laboratory capacity. At the same time, the study found that antibiotics are still often used without prescription in the community. COINCIDE shows that coordinated One Health policies can work, but continued surveillance, communication, and responsible antibiotic use remain essential.
