Improving urinary tract infection diagnosis in older adults:Validation of a biomarkerpanel, UTI GOLD

Detection of a urinary tract infection (UTI), such as cystitis or pyelonephritis, in older people is challenging because of the presence of other chronic conditions that can mimic UTI and reduce reliability of urine tests. Current diagnostic tests are inadequate and often result in over- and underdiagnosis of UTIs, leading to suboptimal treatment and unnecessary side-effects.

Approach/working method

This project builds upon a previous ZonMw study in which we identified five new urine markers. In this study we aim to validate the performance of these biomarkers in daily practice.

(Expected) results

The goal is to validate a diagnostic tool that is more accurate and reliable, particularly in older people who may present with symptoms that mimic other conditions. We hypothesize that this new tool will lead to better patient outcomes, as both over- and undertreatment of UTI will be avoided.
