MEND-CARE: MENtal Dysregulation in emergency care; improving recognition and response
Many people who visit emergency departments (EDs) are mentally overwhelmed or emotionally destabilized. We use the name ‘mental dysregulation’ for this condition: a (temporary) alteration in a person's mental state that affects communication and interaction with others. ED staff often lack the tools to recognize and support this condition properly.
ConnectEM
ConnectEM is a new nurse-led method that supports early identification of mental dysregulation and to provide tailored care. ConnectEM includes a screening tool that identifies the type and severity of mental dysregulation. ConnectEM also provides tools for appropriate care.
Aim
The goal of this line of research is to improve care and provide practical knowledge for hospitals and policymakers.
Aanpak
We will introduce the ConnectEM method in five EDs. Via evaluation, using the Realist Evaluation method, we will improve and test the method. We’ll also study how often mental dysregulation occurs in EDs and what helps ConnectEM to work best.
