Person-centred, data-driven prescribing of antihypertensive medication in general practice

Nearly 1 in 6 Dutch people has high blood pressure. Untreated high blood pressure is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and mortality.

Undertreatment of high blood pressure

Most people are treated by their general practitioner. There are discrepancies between the recommendations in guidelines and daily practice. This can lead to undertreatment of high blood pressure. Many general practitioners believe that the treatment of high blood pressure could be improved.

Aim

We will develop, test and evaluate a person-centred and data-driven clinical decision support system that allows general practitioners and patients to make well-informed medication choices together.

Approach

For the development, we use data from medical records and interviews with healthcare providers and patients. We test the system in several general practices to improve the model. Finally, we conduct an experiment with 40 general practices to evaluate whether the support system adds value to the treatment of high blood pressure and how general practitioners use it.

Addressing knowledge questions

This project addresses prioritized knowledge gaps from the Knowledge Agenda for General Practice:

  • Which antihypertensive drug should be prescribed as first choice?
  • How can personalized care and continuity be ensured when using digital applications?
