What makes them tick? Characteristics of youth that gamble, the prevalence and possible gateways to (harmful) gambling.

International studies indicate that young adults are a risk group for developing problem gambling. There is evidence that the normalization of gambling, such as through exposure to loot boxes and sports betting in daily life, can be a stepping stone to playing more and other types of gambling games.

Objective
The objective is to investigate, in the Dutch context, which young adults are at increased risk and how gambling can become a problem by examining which demographic, cognitive, psychological, and social factors predict (problems with) gambling in general and its increase over time.

Approach
With our multidisciplinary project team consisting of scientists from various disciplines, therapists, and experts with lived experience, we will combine quantitative and qualitative research methods to answer the following research questions:

What factors influence gambling consumption among Dutch young adults?

What preventive measures would help reduce gambling-related harm among Dutch young adults?

Expected Results
The results of this research will contribute to the development of effective strategies for promoting responsible gambling behavior and preventing gambling-related harm.
