Infecties en afstoting zijn de belangrijkste oorzaken van morbiditeit en mortaliteit na orthotope (vervangende) levertransplantatie. Om afstoting na een levertransplantatie te voorkomen krijgen patiënten medicatie die de afweer, met name het verworven immuunsysteem, onderdrukken. Hierdoor worden die patiënten meer afhankelijk van hun aangeboren immuunsysteem, waaronder ook de afweer via het lectine complementsysteem. Dit complementsysteem levert in het bijzonder een belangrijke bijdrage aan de afweer tegen infecties. De lever is verantwoordelijk voor de productie van specifieke eiwitten die betrokken zijn bij complement-activatie. Een lever van een donor met erfelijke deficiënties aan deze lectine-eiwitten geeft een verhoogd risico op zowel bacteriële als virale infecties na transplantatie, soms ook afhankelijk van de complement status van de ontvanger. In dit project zijn we er nu in geslaagd genetische risicoprofielen van dit lectine complement activatie-systeem te indentificeren die voorspellen welke donor en/of ontvanger een verhoogd risico geeft op bacteriële en virale infecties na levertransplantatie.
