Prevention of neuropsychiatric side effects caused by dexamethasone: translational insights from a placebo-controlled trial with cortisol

In Nederland worden jaarlijks meer dan 800.000 individuen behandeld met synthetische glucocorticoïden zoals dexamethasone. Deze medicijnen zijn levensreddend maar veroorzaken ook significante neuro psychiatrische klachten bij duizenden patiënten. Een ongewilde bijwerking van dexamethasone is de sterke suppressie van cortisol, wat een effect heeft op de hersenfunctie. In dit project wordt bij patiënten die een hersenoperatie ondergaan en met een hoge dosis dexamethasone worden behandeld, naar het effect van een cortisol behandelinggekeken. Het doel van het project is om een behandelingsprotocol te ontwikkelen die direct voordeel oplevert voor patiënten die een hersenoperatie ondergaan.
