Shining light on loss of control over substance and food intake.

Obesitas en middelenverslaving zijn gezondheidsproblemen met grote sociale, economische en juridische gevolgen. In dit project worden de mechanismen in de hersenen in kaart gebracht die bijdragen aan het verlies van controle over voedselinname, cocaïne- en alcoholgebruik. Controleverlies is een kernkenmerk van deze aandoeningen die met de huidige behandelmethoden niet gericht wordt behandeld. In dit project combineren wij diermodellen voor dwangmatige voedselinname en middelengebruik met optogenetica, een innovatieve technologie die het mogelijk maakt om specifieke circuits in de hersenen kortdurend te (in)activeren. Wij zullen de hersencircuits identificeren die betrokken zijn bij controleverlies over voedselinname en middelengebruik. Dit onderzoek levert belangrijke informatie op om vernieuwende behandelmethoden voor obesitas en middelenverslaving te ontwikkelen, zoals transcraniële magnetische stimulatie en diepe hersenstimulatie, met het doel de controle over gedrag te herstellen.
