Theranostics for the development of successful natural dendritic cell vaccines to combat and prevent cancer
Het stimuleren van het eigen immuunsysteem met behulp van vaccinatie werkt heel goed bij het bestrijden van infectieziekten. In de afgelopen jaren is ook getracht te vaccineren tegen kanker. We hebben gezien dat het immuunsysteem van een aantal patiënten wordt gestimuleerd en soms leidt dit ook tot het kleiner worden van de tumoren maar niet altijd. In deze VICI heb ik meer inzicht gekregen in de werking van zogenaamde dendritische cel vaccins. Dendritische cellen zijn de cellen die beladen met kleine stukjes tumoreiwitten de afweercellen kunnen aanzetten om tumorcellen op te ruimen. We hebben gezien dat ze op de juiste manier gestimuleerd moeten worden en dat verschillende subtypes dendritische cellen tezamen een betere tumorafweer kunnen bewerkstelligen. Deze ontwikkelde aanpak wordt momenteel in de kliniek toegepast in een klinische studie. Met de in deze VICI ontwikkelde technieken om immuun activatie te bekijken zien we dat het afweersysteem inderdaad gestimuleerd wordt.
