A Smart Surveillance Strategy for Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The SAMPAN study investigated the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium. First, methods were developed to detect this bacterium, especially the antibiotic-resistant strains, both in humans and in water, as it thrives well in moist environments.

Results

Carriage in people varied between Rotterdam, Rome, and Jakarta, ranging from 5 to 29% with possible seasonal effects. Antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found most frequently in hospitalized patients in Jakarta. It was also detected in untreated hospital wastewater. In Rotterdam, it was no longer found after passing through a hospital wastewater treatment system. In rivers of all 3 cities, antibiotic-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa was detected at multiple time points, including strains that showed genetic similarities with those found in patients.

Follow-up

This threat and ongoing increase of antibiotic resistance urges for cross-border follow-up studies focusing on measures to prevent the spread of these pathogens.
