Together we understand better: Improved collaboration - more appropriate care for glioma patients

Approximately 150 people are diagnosed with primary brain tumours, also called gliomas, in the Leiden/The Hague region every year. This forces them to make important decisions. Often, they experience language impairments such as production and/or comprehension, limiting their involvement in treatment decisions. Their treatment takes place across multiple care pathways, with the certified nurse specialist as their main contact.

Aim

This project strengthens the existing interprofessional collaboration between healthcare professionals and patients and integrates the expertise of speech and language pathologists to better support patients. 

Approach

To achieve this objective, patient-oriented information materials, training for healthcare professionals and knowledge products for healthcare and education are being developed. This enables communication-vulnerable patients to participate more effectively in shared decision making and improves the quality of care, while professionals are given tools to provide them with optimal support.
